Capannelle winery was founded in 1974 by Raffaele Rossetti, a Roman businessman, who purchased the 16th century farmhouse and planted 3.5 hectares of vineyards in Gaiole in Chianti, the homeland of Chianti Classico. In 1988, a meeting between Capannelle and Avignonesi, a historical vineyard in Montepulciano, resulted in the creation of 50&50, a blend of Capannelle Sangiovese and Avignonesi Merlot. The winery was purchased by James B. Sherwood, founder of the Orient Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises (now Belmond Hotels) in 1997 who expanded the vineyards to todays 35 hectares and modernising the cellars.
The 16th century farmhouse underwent extensive renovations and restoration which has resulted in 5 full comfort rooms, a panoramic pool, a beautiful terrace and an English-style garden; a unique luxury resort producing exceptional wines.
Capannelle produces Chardonnay, Rosato, Chianti Classico, Solare and 50&50 wines.
The Top Selection and Capannelle partnership has endured since 2004.
