Established in 1850, Domaine de la Coume du Roy is the oldest winery in Maury, a small appellation of 2000 hectares in heart of the Agly valley, between Corbières and Pyrénées. Today, the domain is run by Agnes de Volontat-Bachelet, the 6th generation of family vintners, and her husband Jean-François. The estate itself is composed of 25 hectares of vines including Grenache (noir, gris, blanc), Macabeu, Muscat d’Alexandrie and Muscat petit grain, which grow on a black schist bedrock soil. Grapes are harvested late, usually in the first half of October when the sugar levels are frequently over 250g/l. Although their production includes dry wines, it is their sweet and fortified wines that are the stars.
